Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
The Mothers' Milk Bank at Austin was founded in 1999 by two Austin Neonatologists who had seen the live saving power of human milk in NICUs and wanted to create a safe way for donor human milk to be shared.
What is your primary product or service?
We exist to collect donated human milk from Moms all over the country, though primarily in Texas. As the largest milk bank in North America, we service over 130 hospitals in 24 states and nearly 100 outpatients each year with our pasteurized and pooled donor human milk.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We are unique in that we are a non-profit. We accept donation of human milk to help save babies lives and also fundraise to support our charitable care program which ensures that no family, regardless of income or insurance, get told no.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have 1 location at 2911, Medical Arts St. Suite #12, just north of the UT Longhorns Stadium on Dean Keaton which is about 2,900 square feet. We are in the process of building our new home which will be at 5925 Dillard Circle, across the street from the ACC Highland Campus on Airport Blvd which will expand us to 15,000 square feet. This move will allow us to double our milk production therefore saving double the infants, offer free community space for parenting classes and lactation support groups, as well as give us the research lab space to develop a milk product which will eliminate the need for fortification in NICUs. We are hoping to be in our new home April 2017.
What type of payments do you accept?
We are a non-profit and do not collect money at our location. All donations can be provided here: https://milkbank.secure.force.com/donate
Which areas do you service?
We are looking to expand our Austin Donor base but current have 35 depots (local milk drop off locations that then ship the milk collected to us) in Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee and Washington DC. We plan to open at least 5 new depot location for 2017. Our milk goes to over 130 hospitals in 24 states and we service about 100 outpatients in 15 states.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Our company is a 501(c) non-profit and utilizes about 19 full and part-time staff members as well as dozens of community volunteers, interns and student work study participants.
What are your hours of operation?
We are open Monday-Friday 9am-5pm both for milk donation and phone calls.
